Hi everyone. I’m Zhichao Wei. It’s great to see you all again at Ximalaya Book Club. As someone who makes a living off psychology, last time I talked to you here about Blindsight, a science-fiction novel. This time, I want to talk about Guilt Psychology, which has been hugely popular lately—a crime-detection thriller.
I’ll focus on this book from a psychological angle: the novel’s most distinctive and defining feature, “criminal psychological profiling.”
I plan to explore this topic from two angles. First, let’s talk about how “criminal psychological profiling” is portrayed in Guilt Psychology—the literary and fictional side of it. From this angle, we can take a close look at what makes the novel shine, as well as some aspects that leave us feeling a little disappointed.
The second angle is the real-world side. Drawing on the papers and books I’ve looked up, I’ll talk with you about the place “criminal psychological profiling” actually occupies in the real world: Is it really as magical as novels and films make it look? And just how much does it really do in the real world?
