In this episode, I borrow the classic framework proposed by historian Walter Russell Mead in Special Providence to unpack the four traditional schools that have shaped American foreign policy: Hamiltonian, Wilsonian, Jeffersonian, and Jacksonian. Then I use this ‘four faces’ ruler to pinpoint Donald Trump: which school is he really from—or is he a ‘hexagonal warrior’ who somehow exists outside all three realms?
