What This Episode Is About
Who would have thought that a “Deist” with practically nothing to do with Catholicism would turn out to be “theologically in sync” with the late Pope Francis? Starting from Francis’s little-known position as a “science-friendly pope,” this episode maps out the hidden intellectual thread of Deism—a current running underground for three centuries. We’ll go from Newton’s “clockwork universe,” and Voltaire’s “watchmaker God,” to how Thomas Paine and Thomas Jefferson wrote the “Creator” into the United States Declaration of Independence; then to Einstein’s belief in “Spinoza’s God” and Elon Musk’s Simulation Hypothesis. Finally, I, Zhichao Wei, will use the universe’s elegant simplicity and the Hard Problem of Consciousness (David Chalmers) to explain why I believe there is a “First Cause” beyond the universe.
