Europe’s young protest, East Asia’s lie flat, America’s turn socialist: the common root is The Pinch | Young people everywhere are near breaking point

What this episode is about

Young Europeans are out in the streets, young East Asians are lying flat, young Americans are embracing socialism. Completely different ways of saying it, but it’s the same sentence: in this system, we can’t see a way out. Why are young people all over the world hitting their limit at the same time?

The spine of this episode is The Pinch: How the Baby Boomers Took Their Children’s Future – and Why They Should Give It Back by David Willetts, a former Conservative MP and thinker in Britain (no Chinese edition yet). Alongside it I bring in Why Is Japan So Cold to Its Young? by the Japanese sociologist Masahiro Yamada (original title: なぜ日本は若者に冷酷なのか), and The Theft of a Decade: Baby Boomers, Millennials, and the Distortion of Our Economy by Wall Street Journal columnist Joseph C. Sternberg (no Chinese edition yet). Three books, three very different societies — Britain, Japan and the US — and they all point to the same root cause: the generational squeeze.

Young people are struggling to find jobs, buy homes, save and start families, and mostly not because they aren’t trying hard enough. Over the past few decades the baby boomers — a huge generation holding most of the wealth and most of the votes — have built and defended a whole set of arrangements in the job market, housing, welfare and public finance that squeeze the young.

I start with the riots in France in the autumn of 2026: nearly 32% of the French education ministry’s budget goes straight into retired civil servants’ pensions, while schools can’t find the money to fix buildings or hire teachers. Then a fable about a hunting tribe shows how the contract between generations got broken. After that I take apart Europe’s two-tier labour law, Japan’s lifetime employment and “one hire decides your life,” America’s student loans and house prices, and the welfare ledgers of Britain, the US and Japan — and finally explain why, under “grey-haired democracy,” the whole system is almost impossible to change.

Highlights

  • The ledger behind the French riots: nearly a third of the education budget flows into pensions, while students can’t even get their school buildings repaired
  • The hunting-tribe fable: how the biggest generation, the baby boomers, rewrote a fair contract between generations into rules that favour themselves
  • The labour-market wall: Europe’s “insiders” and “outsiders,” Japan’s “one hire decides your life” — why they block the young in particular
  • Squeezed the same way, so why do French youth take to the streets, East Asian youth go home and lie flat, and American youth turn to “socialism”?
  • The welfare state is draining blood from the young: every extra year in the median voter’s age raises pension spending by 0.5 percentage points of GDP
