The Israel Lobby and U.S. Foreign Policy: How America Got “Hijacked” by Israel

What this episode is about

The U.S. is fighting a war with Iran that even some of its own government officials are openly questioning. Is this really about America’s interests—or someone else’s?

Twenty years ago, John J. Mearsheimer of the University of Chicago and Stephen M. Walt of Harvard gave an answer in The Israel Lobby and U.S. Foreign Policy that has gotten them yelled at for two decades: America’s unconditional support for Israel isn’t driven by strategy or by moral obligation. It exists because a perfectly legal, perfectly open domestic political coalition is able to hijack the foreign policy of the world’s top superpower, year after year.

This coalition is no secret society. It’s a big net woven from political organizations like AIPAC, think tanks, media-watchdog groups and tens of millions of evangelical Christians. It can feed obedient lawmakers with campaign money, and it can “take out” any politician who dares to criticize Israel at election time. It can put its own people in key White House jobs, and it can socially destroy any critic by slapping the “anti-Semite” label on them.

From the total collapse of the Israeli–Palestinian peace process, to the launch of the Iraq War, to every road toward reconciliation with Iran being sealed off one by one—in this episode I follow the two authors’ investigation to see how this coalition locked America’s foreign-policy wagon onto a single track. And twenty years later, in a new long essay published in March 2026, Mearsheimer argues that the lobby’s grip on policy is as tight as ever, but its monopoly on public discourse is starting to crack.

Highlights

  • U.S. aid to Israel has added up to more than $154 billion, plus three super-privileges no other country would even dare to dream of—including near-unconditional veto protection at the UN Security Council
  • The Israel Lobby is not a conspiracy; it’s a legal coalition that has taken interest-group politics to the extreme—with AIPAC at its core, plus think tanks, media-watchdog groups and tens of millions of evangelicals
  • A congressman with 22 years in office was ousted just for meeting Arafat, and a chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee was hounded over one mild remark—afterwards an AIPAC official openly bragged, “we got him out of Congress”
  • Toppling Saddam was originally Israel’s strategic goal—how the neoconservatives in the lobby turned it into U.S. national policy and dragged America into the Iraq quagmire
  • Mearsheimer’s new essay from March 2026, “Israel, the Lobby and the Iran War”: the lobby’s control over policy is as strong as ever, but its monopoly on public discourse is collapsing
