How should we evaluate the film Terminator Genisys?

Pros:

1. It completely abandons the rotten third and fourth installments and picks up from the first two. Nicely done.
2. It reverses the order in which the first two films unfold. What a great idea.
3. It pokes fun at and pays tribute to all kinds of running gags from the first two films, which is a real treat for longtime fans.
4. The way it handles John Connor is actually quite clever (it’s just that they cast the wrong actor).

Cons:

1. The action scenes are not only desperately lacking in imagination (they’re all the sort of set pieces viewers could picture just by reading the script), they’re also shot in a slapdash way—for instance, the female lead’s draw-and-fire movements are limp, slow, and sticky, astonishingly amateurish.
2. The plot lurches forward carelessly at every turn, wasting all sorts of details that should have been highlights. For example, the script actually gives every character a reasonably convincing emotional storyline, but everyone seems to be in such a hurry to get their lines over with.

Like this film, Jurassic World is also a belated sequel, but its script has far more integrity than that one-note, pure-popcorn ride. Personally, I feel the ratings on Douban and IMDb are too low. Overall, this is the most dependable sequel in the series since Cameron left it behind. The script has plenty of big moments; unfortunately, the director’s mediocrity seriously undercuts the effect they should have had. What a shame.
