For the past two hundred years, we’ve been used to reading Dream of the Red Chamber as a literary classic in the realist tradition, assuming that its story takes place in a real physical world. But what if that premise itself is wrong?
The book I’m discussing today, The True Ending of Dream of the Red Chamber (written by Yun Jian), puts forward a truly radical idea: the “dream” in the title isn’t a metaphor about life being like a dream. It means exactly what it says—a dream taking place inside the consciousness of a brain.
Under this logic, the Grand Prospect Garden we know, Lin Daiyu, and even Jia Baoyu himself are all projections of another life. The moment the person in the dream realizes that he is a phantom, Cao Xueqin gives us not a worldly tragedy, but a grand annihilation—a collapse involving the entire world.
