What this episode covers

This is an age of unprecedented freedom of choice—and also an age of unprecedentedly scarce happiness.

Digital technology has empowered this age, showing us a dizzying number of possibilities: better ways to make money, more carefree lifestyles, more attractive people to date, more stimulating forms of entertainment…

That is how we ended up in the age of choice paralysis, forever worrying that we have “made the wrong choice” and imagining that “the next one might be better.” As this mindset intensifies, people sink into anxiety, confusion, and unhappiness.

This book focuses on precisely this symptom of our times and proposes a way of life that pushes back against it. The author argues that happiness does not come from finding the “optimal solution,” but from making a “pretty good” choice and then devoting ourselves to it wholeheartedly—cultivating it, investing in it, and going deep. This mindset of “choosing one thing and sticking with it for life” is the true source of happiness, meaning, and fulfillment.

You will hear

  • How choice paralysis affects us at a deeper level—and how it can deprive us of happiness and meaning
  • A way of life for pushing back against choice paralysis and reclaiming happiness and meaning
  • Five cognitive-behavioral tools to stop being trapped by choice paralysis

Quote of the episode

People actually long to make choices and, in doing so, take on a certain amount of responsibility, because responsibility gives us a sense of value and meaning.

Unlimited possibilities may be incredibly tempting, but they can also make us lose our way. Only by making a brave choice and throwing ourselves into it wholeheartedly can we reach genuine fulfillment and freedom.

We do not need to wait for some dramatic opportunity to prove ourselves. Turning a string of ordinary choices into extraordinary achievements—that is the hero’s journey available to most of us.
